By openly challenging Yusuf Datti; Labour Party’s Vice Presidential candidate to a public debate, Prof Wole Soyinka demeaned and put himself on the firing line. Honestly, the great Kongi is far above that level and must never be tempted to enter the trenches with the madding crowd, he won’t come out of it unscathed.
Without a scintilla of doubt, the barrage of attacks and vitriol heaped on anyone with a dissenting opinion by the Obidients is not only undemocratic but smacks of fascism. Fascism thrives where dissenting opinions are frowned upon and only one opinion appears as the sole gospel truth. This is uncalled for in a democracy. I guess this explains why Prof Wole Soyinka described the group as fascistic
However, describing the Obidients as solely an Igbo group or thinking that all of them are members of the Labour Party is an obvious mischaracterization. The Obidients cut across different tribes, states, and even religions. There are more silent Obidients from other tribes that I have personally encountered in real life than those ranting on social media.
This is the silent majority tagging along with the noisy minority. Unfortunately, these are groups of young people mostly frustrated with the system and seeking means to either repair it magically or get the whole thing destroyed, altogether.
The coming administration of President Tinubu will either reinforce the Obidient movement or stifle its life by meeting the aspirations of most Nigerians. If anyone thinks he can stop the Obidients with propaganda or intellectual arguments, such a person wastes his time. These guys are not ready for any intellectual argument that goes against them.

And they don’t even respect status or stature, not even the mighty Wole Soyinka! Even if any of the ancient prophets were to appear to them in criticism, they would give it to the prophet in a ‘wotowoto’ manner. They are simply too disgruntled to respect anyone or anything!!
