As the world marks World Mental Health Day 2023, Miss Tourism Nigeria, Ebere Joy, has taken a bold stance in advocating for the universal right to mental well-being. In a poignant statement released on Tuesday, she emphasized the theme of this year’s global observance, “Mental health is a universal human right.”

Ebere Joy, a prominent figure in the world of beauty pageants, a Business Consultant, and a Financial Advisor, articulated her profound belief that mental health is not merely an afterthought but an intrinsic part of human existence. She passionately asserted that every individual, regardless of their background or circumstances, deserves the right to experience the highest standard of mental well-being.

While stating that the heart of this fundamental right encompasses protection from mental health risks, access to quality care, and the freedom to live independently while being valued members of their communities, Ebere Joy underscored the pivotal role mental health plays in our lives, serving as the foundation for physical health, the cornerstone of our relationships, and the key to leading fulfilling lives.

“Startling global statistics reveal that one in eight individuals grapples with mental health challenges, with far-reaching consequences affecting not only their physical health but also their livelihoods”.

Ebere Joy further expressed particular concern about the escalating prevalence of mental health issues among adolescents and young people. She fervently called for prioritizing their well-being, recognizing them as the future of society. She stressed the urgent need to create an environment where they feel safe discussing their mental health concerns, seeking help, and receiving the support they require.

Again, Ebere Joy made a fervent plea against the unjust practice of depriving individuals of their human rights or excluding them from decisions concerning their own health due to mental health conditions. She noted with deep concern that individuals with mental health conditions worldwide continue to endure discrimination and human rights violations, emphasizing that collective action is essential to address this grave injustice.

However, she emphasized that the responsibility for mental health extends to every individual. She urged people to educate themselves about mental health, lend empathetic ears to those struggling with it, and prioritize mental health in their communities.

Additionally, Ebere Joy shared four personal tips for a happier life, encapsulated in her message titled “Find Joy in Your Chaos.” These tips include managing expectations, letting go of the uncontrollable, prioritizing physical well-being, and embracing the present moment.
