President Bola Tinubu has emphasized the need for companies involved in mineral exploration to prioritize the health and safety of Nigerians and host communities. The President made this commitment during a presentation by Course 32 participants of the National Defence College (NDC) in Abuja, titled “Harnessing the Mining Industry for Enhanced National Security and Development: Strategic Options for Nigeria by 2035.”
In response to the presentation delivered by Colonel Olajide Bello on behalf of the delegation, President Tinubu acknowledged the participants’ work and underscored the importance of diversifying Nigeria’s economy. He also directed security agencies to intensify efforts against illegal mining activities nationwide.
“We must nip that in the bud,” President Tinubu said, highlighting the need for a stable economic environment and the importance of addressing the challenges of illegal miners.
The President expressed concern over the health implications of mining activities for communities near mining sites and stressed the importance of establishing medical centers and facilities to protect the well-being of these residents.
Additionally, President Tinubu assured the NDC delegation of his administration’s commitment to completing the NDC headquarters in Abuja.
Rear Admiral Olumuyiwa Olotu, the Commandant of the NDC, praised the institution’s progress under President Tinubu’s leadership. He also appealed for support in completing the college’s permanent site in Abuja, which has been under construction since 2010.
