Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, Tuesday took the oath of office after defeating his rival Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari to emerge, as president of the 10th Senate.
Former senate minority leader Akpabio received 63 votes to defeat the former governor of Zamfara Yari, who received 46. Prior to the start of the 10th National Assembly, the electorate of parliamentarians had started voting on the Nigerian Senate floor.
After reviewing Senator Godswill Akpabi’s history, Senator Ali Ndume proposed the former Akwa Ibom governor. Senator Olamilekan Solomon Yayi of Ogun State seconded Akpabio’s candidacy. Senator Ishaku Abbo also proposed Senator Abdul Aziz Yari as a candidate for Senate President.

Meanwhile, Akpabio has vowed to work and carry out his responsibilities in accordance with the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s constitution.
Akpabio, a politician and attorney, held the position of minister for Niger Delta Affairs from 2019 to 2022. On May 11, 2022, he resigned at President Muhammadu Buhari’s request in order to run in the All Progressives Congress presidential primary.

He presided over Akwa Ibom State as governor from 2007 to 2015, while Yari was chosen to lead Zamfara State on April 26, 2011.
