It is important for those who report news to have some background information on issues they report on and spokesmen of political office holders must be able to distinguish between information dissemination and perception management. Every news item is not for perception management.

The news that is making the rounds that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has emerged as the Chairman of West Africa’s regional organisation, ECOWAS is deceptive. Tinubu as a person is not the Chairman of ECOWAS on his own merit or because the other 15 heads of State found him worthy or exceptional.

The decision to make Nigeria the chairman of ECOWAS had been reached long before Tinubu became President. So if a goat had emerged as Nigerian President at this point in time, that goat would have gone ahead to chair ECOWAS because the position is for Nigeria.

Also, if the right thing is done and the electoral heist perpetrated by INEC and the APC is reversed, anyone who emerges president within the pendency of Nigeria’s turn at the ECOWAS chairmanship will continue as ECOWAS chairman.

The idea to make it look like Tinubu’s emergence as ECOWAS chairman is some sort of vote of confidence on him by his colleague heads of State is deceptive.

    Thank you.
