The Federal High Court in Lagos has granted bail of N20m to suspended Governor Godwin Emefiele. The bail was given with one surety in a like sum after Justice Nicholas Oweibo considered Emefiele’s counsel’s submissions.
The court dismissed the Federal Government’s claim of him being a flight risk due to lack of evidence. Emefiele, aged 61, pleaded “not guilty” to charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

However, the bail application was opposed by the Federal Government’s counsel, Nkiru Jones-Nebo, citing a lack of time to respond and concerns about Emefiele retaining his passport. The court overruled the opposition and ordered Emefiele to be held at Ikoyi Correctional Centre until his bail is perfected. The trial is scheduled for November 14.
