The government of Thailand has commended the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) of Nigeria for its vigorous fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking, which has significantly improved Nigeria’s international image.
The praise came from Mr. Kriwat Pharmorabuta, Charge d’affaires and Deputy Head of Mission of the Royal Thai Embassy in Nigeria, during a visit to NDLEA’s Chairman/CEO, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd).
According to a press release by Femi Babafemi, Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA, Mr. Pharmorabuta highlighted the reduction in the number of Nigerians in Thai prisons, noting a drop from 800 to less than 200. He attributed this positive change to the NDLEA’s effective strategies, making it increasingly difficult for individuals to traffic drugs.
In addition, Mr. Pharmorabuta emphasized the critical role of NDLEA’s visa clearance in the Thai visa issuance process for Nigerians. He stated that possessing an NDLEA certificate offers a 90–95% assurance of obtaining a Thai visa, underscoring the agency’s thorough and reliable vetting process.
The Thai envoy also expressed his commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, offering support for NDLEA personnel through training and scholarships.

Brig. Gen. Marwa welcomed the partnership and expressed interest in Thailand’s expertise in alternative development, particularly in transitioning cannabis growers to cultivating crops like rice, sugarcane, and cocoa.
