The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has thrown its support behind Senator Ned Nwoko’s proposal to establish Anioma State, in a move aimed at rectifying historical imbalances in Nigeria’s state distribution. Senator Nwoko, representing Delta North in the Senate, introduced the bill to address what he sees as a longstanding inequity in the geopolitical distribution of states, particularly within the South-East zone.

In a press statement, HURIWA emphasized that the creation of Anioma State is not just an administrative adjustment but a necessary correction of historical oversight. They highlighted the disparity that has left the South-East with only five states, compared to six in other zones, except the North-West, which has seven. This, they argued, has led to a perpetual disadvantage in legislative representation and resource distribution, with the South-East having fewer senators than other zones.

The association argued that Anioma State would bring about equitable representation and enhance the distribution of national resources. With nine local government areas from the present Delta State, including six rich in oil and gas resources, the proposed state holds substantial economic potential. They stressed that the region’s economic strength, coupled with its significant human capital, makes it a promising candidate for statehood.

Moreover, HURIWA highlighted the socio-cultural significance of Anioma State, noting the region’s unique cultural heritage and the desire for recognition and autonomy to preserve its identity. They cited widespread reported support from socio-cultural groups such as Izu Anioma and Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo, as well as political and traditional leaders in the Anioma region, including the late Asagba of Asaba, Obi (Prof) Chike Edozien.

HURIWA emphasized that the creation of Anioma State is not just about addressing regional imbalances but also about fostering national unity and equity. They argued that fair representation and resource allocation are crucial for addressing historical grievances and promoting inclusivity and justice within the Nigerian federation.

In conclusion, HURIWA fully endorsed Senator Ned Nwoko’s proposal for the creation of Anioma State, emphasizing its importance in achieving justice and equity for the South-East geopolitical zone. They called on the Nigerian government and all stakeholders to support the proposal and take decisive action to bring Anioma State into existence, highlighting the need to correct past imbalances and build a more equitable and united Nigeria.
