The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has decried the rising insecurity in Anambra State, citing it as evidence of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration’s failure to prioritize safety and security.
HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, highlighted concerns over the spate of kidnappings, armed robberies, and violent crimes, which have rendered 15 out of 21 local government areas unsafe, according to a recent statement by non-indigenes residing in the state. The association emphasized that this development undermines the constitutional mandate enshrined in Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, which places the security and welfare of the people as the government’s primary responsibility.
Non-indigenes, represented by their chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Sani, and secretary, Chief Adebayo Adewusi, described areas such as Orumba, Aguata, Ogbaru, Ihiala, and Nnewi South LGAs, among others, as “no-go zones” due to escalating criminal activities. They called for a comprehensive joint security operation to address the crisis.
HURIWA criticized Governor Soludo’s focus on physical infrastructure while neglecting security, stressing that development projects hold little value if citizens cannot live without fear. The association also lamented the lack of coordination among state security agencies and inadequate support for local vigilante groups, which are vital in safeguarding rural communities.
To curb the insecurity, HURIWA proposed urgent measures, including the creation of a well-equipped joint task force, investment in surveillance technology, and strengthening the Anambra Vigilante Group through better training and resources. The association also called for social intervention programs to address unemployment and youth empowerment, alongside expedited judicial processes to deter crime.

As the festive season approaches, HURIWA urged the Soludo administration to act decisively and ensure a safe environment for residents. “Leadership is about accountability. Governor Soludo must take immediate steps to restore security in Anambra,” the association emphasized, noting that infrastructure achievements are meaningless without safety.
