The Rivers State Government has debunked claims that the Supreme Court reinstated Martin Chike Amaewhule and 26 others as members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Addressing a press conference in Port Harcourt on Monday, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dagogo Israel Iboroma, SAN, clarified that the Apex Court made no such pronouncement.
“The Supreme Court made no order whatsoever reinstating Martin Chike Amaewhule and 26 others as members of Rivers State House of Assembly, neither did the Supreme Court make any finding on their status,” Iboroma stated.
He urged the public to disregard “false narratives and propaganda” being spread by Amaewhule and his lawyers about the court proceedings.
Providing details, Iboroma explained that the case, SC/CV/1701/2024, involved the 2024 Appropriation Law. He noted that since the 2025 budget had already been passed and implemented, the appeal had become academic, prompting the governor to withdraw it.
He further disclosed that Amaewhule and the 26 lawmakers had defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on December 11, 2023, and consequently lost their seats. However, he maintained that their defection was never a subject of determination in the case before the Supreme Court.
