In a message on his X handle, former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar highlighted the significance of June 12 as Democracy Day, celebrating Nigeria’s 25 years of uninterrupted democracy. He emphasized that democracy has no substitute as a form of government and paid tribute to patriots like Basorun MKO Abiola, Kudirat Abiola, Shehu Yar’Adua, and Alfred Rewane, who fought for democratic governance.

Abubakar commended the political class and civil society for nurturing democracy but criticized the current administration for the past nine years’ severe economic and security challenges, blaming the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He also faulted opposition parties for failing to unite and present a viable alternative to the ruling party, stating this is the major threat to democracy in Nigeria.
