The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has issued a strong appeal for an immediate halt to the escalating wave of barbaric killings and violence plaguing the South-East geopolitical zone.
In an official statement released on Wednesday by the National coordinator; Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA called upon the Federal Government to sever diplomatic ties with Finland and expel the Finnish Ambassador to Nigeria.

This action, according to HURIWA is intended to facilitate the apprehension of Simon Ekpa, who has allegedly been actively promoting sit-at-home orders, instigating violence, and orchestrating killings in the South-East region.
Furthermore, HURIWA urged President Bola Tinubu to demonstrate a commitment to upholding the rule of law and democratic principles. They called upon the President to direct the Attorney General of the Federation, Ministry of Justice, and Department of State Services to comply with a recent judgment from the Appeal Court. This judgment ordered the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

According to HURIWA, the South-East region has witnessed the loss of numerous innocent lives over the past two years due to the activities of gunmen and security operatives. They specifically highlight the alarming increase in violence since Kanu’s incarceration in mid-2021. The group emphasizes the urgency of addressing these security concerns and protecting the lives of residents in the South-East.
