The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to release the Ecological Fund to the Anambra State Government to manage the existential threats caused by flooding in the South-East state.
In a statement by the National Coordinator; Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, the group urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to probe the Federal Government over the dispensing of the fund, which is shrouded in secrecy and devoid of transparency. “The 2022 flooding, which displaced millions and killed thousands across the Federation, should not be allowed to recur.

“The Ecological Fund Office, created in 1985, aims to reduce ecological problems nationwide through mitigation. In July 2021, the Federal Executive Council approved N16.04 billion ecological fund projects across 12 states and the Federal Capital Territory”.
HURIWA’s Onwubiko, stated that evidence of the money disbursed has not been seen in the country, pointing to mismanagement of the fund by corrupt managers at both state and federal levels.
