Abuja, May 17, 2024 – The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called for all anti-corruption bodies in Nigeria to adhere strictly to the rule of law, urging them to avoid media trials and politically motivated persecution of suspects.
This call was made during a peaceful protest organized by HURIWA to support the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) anti-corruption efforts, emphasizing the need for lawful and human rights-compliant procedures.
HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, presented a letter to the EFCC’s Executive Chairman, Mr. Olanipekun Olukayode, highlighting concerns over recent protests against the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle. The Association frowned at the fact that these allegedly politically sponsored protests have accused Dr. Matawalle of financial improprieties and arms deals dating back fifteen years.
In the letter titled “Sponsored Protest Against Matawalle: Politics Carried Too Far and a Distraction,” HURIWA stressed that allegations alone do not equate to guilt and should be addressed through proper legal channels. The group expressed concern over the potential for these protests to undermine public peace and exert undue pressure on the EFCC.
Onwubiko emphasized Dr. Matawalle’s compliance with legal processes and his readiness to cooperate with the EFCC, calling on the commission to conduct its investigations without external influences. He also urged those with grievances to submit written petitions or seek redress through the courts.

HURIWA warned against the misuse of protests for political gains and suggested that sponsors of such protests should face legal consequences if their allegations are proven false. The group reiterated its support for the EFCC’s mandate to uphold justice impartially and independently.
