Prominent pro-democracy and civil rights advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has commended the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) management for collaborating with the military, Department of State Services (DSS), and the police to ensure the safety of corps members. HURIWA also praised the Federal Executive Council for excluding terrorism hotspots from NYSC deployment areas.

HURIWA emphasized the importance of protecting corps members to maintain the NYSC’s role in fostering national integration and patriotism among Nigerian youths. The group expressed satisfaction with the NYSC’s measures to ensure the well-being and safety of corps members.

HURIWA recalled that Sokoto State NYSC Coordinator, Alhaji Usman Yakubu Yaro, recently confirmed that the service is in constant communication with the Nigerian Military, DSS, Nigeria Police Force, and other key stakeholders to secure corps members during the 2024 Batch ‘B’ stream 1 orientation exercise. “He assured journalists that comprehensive security arrangements are in place, including secured travel routes to various camps.

“Yaro highlighted that corps members would not be deployed to areas with significant security challenges, particularly in the Eastern Senatorial District of the State. HURIWA welcomed these security improvements and the Federal Government’s decision to halt NYSC postings to unsafe regions.

“The Minister of Youths, Ms. Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, reaffirmed the suspension of NYSC postings to states deemed unsafe due to security concerns. She mentioned that this decision involves collaboration with multiple security agencies to ensure corps members’ safety, including group transportation strategies.
