Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, has been hit by severe flooding following the breakdown of the Alau Dam, which had been filled for over a week. The dam’s collapse has submerged numerous homes, and the water continues to destroy farms as it moves toward the river bank.

In response, Prof. Usman Tar, the Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, issued an urgent statement early Tuesday, titled “Flooding Alert for River Bank Residents.” The statement called for immediate evacuation of residents in affected areas, urging them to prioritize their safety and protect their properties.

“Due to the unusually high volume of water this year, we urge all residents living along the river bank to take immediate action to protect themselves,” Prof. Tar stated. He further warned that the dam’s breakdown had created another water channel, which is already causing significant damage to farmlands and homes in its path.

Authorities have provided evacuation routes to ensure the safe passage of residents as floodwaters continue to rise.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the last time Maiduguri experienced such extensive flooding due to issues with the Alau Dam was in 1994, when nearly half of the city was submerged.
