During the 2024 US presidential debate in Philadelphia, Vice President Kamala Harris attacked former President Donald Trump for his susceptibility to manipulation by authoritarian leaders, specifically North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Harris, the Democratic candidate, criticized Trump for his past interactions with dictators, stating, “These dictators and autocrats are rooting for you to be president again because they’re so clear they can manipulate you with flattery and favors.”

Discussing the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, Harris underscored the importance of NATO’s support for Ukraine, warning that without it, Russian President Vladimir Putin would be eyeing further European nations. She directly challenged Trump’s foreign policy stance, accusing him of prioritizing personal relationships with dictators over the nation’s security.

Trump, in response, reiterated his plan to end the war within 24 hours by speaking to both sides but did not specify how. He also took a swipe at President Joe Biden, who dropped out of the race, questioning Biden’s mental acuity. Harris quickly reminded Trump that his opponent is now her, not Biden.

Adding to Harris’s momentum, pop superstar Taylor Swift officially endorsed her candidacy, citing Harris as a “steady-handed, gifted leader” and backing her for her advocacy of LGBTQ+ rights and women’s reproductive health. Swift’s endorsement, shared on Instagram, praised Harris’s leadership style and urged her followers, especially first-time voters, to register early. This endorsement further solidifies Harris’s appeal to younger voters, particularly among women and the LGBTQ+ community.

Swift’s endorsement, signed “Childless Cat Lady,” referenced derogatory language used by Trump’s running mate, Senator JD Vance, in describing women without children. Harris’s campaign welcomed the unexpected but significant support from the singer.
