HURIWA to EFCC: End the Charade in Yahaya Bello’s Case

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has issued a sharp rebuke to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over handling the case involving former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello. HURIWA criticized the confusion and inconsistency surrounding Bello’s visit to the EFCC headquarters, condemning the agency’s lack of coordination and seriousness in addressing the matter.

Bello, who has been declared wanted by the EFCC for alleged involvement in an N80.2 billion money laundering case, reportedly visited the agency’s Abuja office. However, conflicting reports from the EFCC and Bello’s media team have raised concerns about the agency’s competence and the integrity of its anti-corruption efforts.

Ohiare Michael, Director of Yahaya Bello’s Media Office, stated that Bello’s visit was voluntary and out of respect for the rule of law. He emphasized that Bello was not interrogated and was free to leave after arriving at the EFCC office. Michael claimed the former governor’s visit aimed to clear his name and that Bello had legal representation in all related proceedings.

In contrast, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale denied that Bello had been in the agency’s custody and reiterated that Bello remains wanted, with an outstanding warrant for his arrest. Oyewale dismissed claims of any official record of Bello being detained or questioned during the visit.

HURIWA criticized the EFCC’s handling of the situation, calling it a “charade” and urging for reforms. The group argued that the case reflects broader dysfunction within Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies, accusing them of engaging in political theatrics rather than focusing on genuine anti-graft efforts.

“This hide-and-seek game with Yahaya Bello is a coordinated farce and an unpardonable gimmick,” HURIWA declared. “The EFCC must stop this charade and get serious with enforcing anti-graft laws. Otherwise, the agency’s management must be restructured to salvage Nigeria’s fight against corruption.”

The rights group further expressed outrage over the disparity in treatment, comparing how individuals accused of internet fraud are publicly paraded, while someone accused of misappropriating billions is given leniency. “Why are those accused of internet fraud treated as guilty before trial, while a person accused of embezzling Kogi State’s resources can move around freely?” HURIWA questioned.

HURIWA warned that this double standard undermines public trust in Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts. They also called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure his administration’s anti-corruption campaign is not reduced to mere rhetoric, but supported by meaningful action.

“This situation cannot continue if Nigeria is serious about fighting corruption. The EFCC must act decisively, or its credibility will be damaged. President Tinubu’s anti-corruption stance must be demonstrated in action, not just words,” HURIWA concluded.
