HURIWA Pushes for Fair Reforms in Six-Year Term Proposal

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called for a careful reconsideration of the proposed bill that suggests a six-year single term for Nigeria’s President, Governors, and Local Government Council Chairmen. Emphasizing that reforms should be judged by their merits and not party loyalty, HURIWA highlighted the importance of fair and equitable elections that give all candidates an equal chance, regardless of their political affiliations.

While the bill could bring stability, HURIWA raised concerns shared by many Nigerians that a single-term system might allow ineffective leaders to stay in power too long. They stated that this underscores the importance of a vigilant and well-informed electorate that must use their votes to elect only those dedicated to public service and national growth.

To ensure the proposed six-year term is not misused, HURIWA recommended that any legislation should include strict safeguards, such as making it non-amendable for a set period. This would help maintain the law’s integrity and allow time to assess its effect on governance.

HURIWA also pushed for synchronized elections at all levels of government to reduce undue influence from incumbents and level the playing field. Drawing parallels with advanced democracies, they suggested holding elections simultaneously for presidential, governorship, and legislative offices.

Additionally, HURIWA advocated for a rotational presidency to ensure fair representation for all ethnic groups. They pointed to the historical marginalization of some groups, particularly the Igbos, from national leadership roles. A zoning system, they argued, would promote unity and ensure that all ethnic groups have a stake in Nigeria’s leadership.

The association urged lawmakers to prioritize the nation’s interests when considering the bill, suggesting broad public consultations that include the voices of everyday Nigerians. They believe this would enhance trust in the legislative process and secure wider acceptance of the reforms.

While acknowledging concerns about the bill, HURIWA emphasized that it has the potential to strengthen governance and foster unity. They encouraged lawmakers to consider provisions like non-amenability, synchronized elections, and a zoning framework to support a more transparent and inclusive democracy.

HURIWA concluded that these reforms would strengthen Nigeria’s political landscape, ensuring fair representation and leadership for all citizens, fostering national unity, and contributing to more stable governance.
