The Nery Developmental Initiative (NDI) has commended the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for its intensified crackdown on counterfeit and substandard drugs in Nigeria.
Reacting to NAFDAC’s recent enforcement operations in Onitsha, Aba, and Lagos, NDI described the seizure of over N1 trillion worth of falsified medical products as a crucial step toward safeguarding public health.
Speaking on the alarming revelations of fake antiretroviral drugs, expired condoms, and the large-scale distribution of illicit substances, NDI’s leadership expressed deep concern over the threats posed to vulnerable populations, particularly infants, out-of-school youths, and survivors of abuse—the very groups NDI works tirelessly to protect.
The organization further expressed deep concern over the alleged threats faced by NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, and her staff, condemning any attempt to intimidate those working to protect Nigerians from harmful substances.
NDI reaffirmed its commitment to public health advocacy and pledged to collaborate with relevant agencies in creating awareness about the dangers of counterfeit drugs. The organization further supported NAFDAC’s call for stricter penalties, including life imprisonment and the death penalty for those endangering lives through fake drugs.
As part of its mission to uplift the less privileged and protect the rights of vulnerable Nigerians, NDI emphasized the need for stronger regulatory frameworks and urged the National Assembly to fast-track amendments to existing drug control laws.

NDI also stressed the importance of relocating open drug markets to Coordinated Wholesale Centres (CWCs) to curb illegal drug trade and ensure safe pharmaceutical distribution. The organization called on civil society groups, health professionals, and law enforcement agencies to join forces in eradicating counterfeit medical products in Nigeria.
