The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called for immediate and stringent security measures to protect the newly built Second Niger Bridge from acts of vandalism. Describing the vandalism as a treasonous act of economic sabotage and terrorism, HURIWA proposed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu authorize armed security forces to shoot on sight any vandals caught in the act. Additionally, HURIWA urged the installation of round-the-clock CCTV around the bridge.
HURIWA emphasized the importance of the bridge, noting that it serves millions of travelers and is a significant national asset. The organization urged the 60 million Igbos worldwide to express their outrage and support measures to protect the bridge.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, HURIWA suggested that the states adjoining the bridge, especially Anambra and Delta, establish armed youth-led vigilantes to guard the bridge day and night. They also proposed employing native witch doctors for additional security.
The group expressed support for a recent statement by 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, who raised concerns over the bridge’s vandalism after a viral video showed rail fittings being uprooted.

HURIWA called for the Anambra State House of Assembly to amend laws to permit the shooting on sight of vandals. They also recommended that federal and state governments deploy technology like drones and access control systems to secure the bridge. Lastly, HURIWA urged residents to provide credible intelligence on vandals to authorities.
