The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, to base his counter-insurgency strategies on legality and accurate information.
HURIWA criticized the misclassification of North West-based terrorists as bandits and urged military leaders to address internal saboteurs collaborating with these terrorists, which has led to increased military casualties.
They emphasized that General Lagbaja’s statements to the United Nations, wherein he referred to terrorists as bandits, were contextually, historically, and factually incorrect, given that the Nigerian government legally classified them as terrorists in the middle of the previous year.
