HURIWA Protests Attacks on Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s Reputation

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has come forward to address concerns about an ongoing smear campaign aimed at sullying the reputation of Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the former governor of Enugu State. In a press conference held today, the group called for transparency and fairness in evaluating the claims against the respected public figure.

In a statement issued during the press conference, HURIWA vehemently condemned the alleged efforts by powerful political forces to orchestrate a strategic media campaign designed to tarnish the image of Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. The group claims that these forces are motivated by ulterior motives and are attempting to smear his reputation with unfounded allegations.

HURIWA emphasized the need to remind the public of the numerous accomplishments achieved during Governor Ugwuanyi’s tenure, stating that his leadership was marked by transparency, inclusiveness, and a deep commitment to the welfare of the citizens of Enugu State. The group acknowledged his remarkable achievements in areas such as good governance, infrastructural development, healthcare, and education.

Furthermore, HURIWA pointed out that Governor Ugwuanyi fulfilled many of his campaign promises, notably his commitment to opening up Nsukka, the university town housing the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). Several development projects were initiated in the area, including the construction of the Opi-Nsukka Road and a secretariat annex at Edeoballa for state civil servants working in the Enugu North senatorial zone.

The statement continued to highlight the former governor’s contributions in other parts of the state, particularly Enugu East and Enugu West. Notable projects included the dualization of the Emene to Nike Lake Resort Hotel road and the relocation of the Building Material/Electrical Parts Market near Kenyatta, among others.

HURIWA also commended Governor Ugwuanyi for being worker-friendly, ensuring prompt payment of salaries and other entitlements to civil servants, and approving the minimum wage, promotions, and housing accommodations for civil servants.

The human rights group urged the public to critically evaluate the information being disseminated by the individuals involved in the alleged smear campaign, stressing the importance of fairness and unbiased assessment of a public figure’s character and conduct.

In conclusion, HURIWA called on the public to exercise discernment when faced with sensational and unverified claims against public figures and encouraged those engaged in the alleged malicious campaign to engage in constructive dialogue and debate rather than undermining the reputation of a dedicated public servant.
