Barely a few days after a group called ‘Northern Elders’ protested President Tinubu’s order for the CBN to relocate some of its key departments to Lagos, the Federal Government has again directed FAAN to move its national head office from Abuja to Lagos!
The question is, what is President Tinubu’s government trying to achieve by moving key Government parastatals from the FCT to Lagos? From all indications, Lagos is congested and cannot absorb more federal institutions. On the other hand, Abuja is still sparsely populated and needs more such federal institutions to accord it the very essence of a federal capital territory.

President Tinubu’s attempt to relocate some of these federal agencies from Abuja to Lagos would amount to a waste of time and money. No federal agency wants to be far from the seat of Government. Secondly, most of their meetings and operational engagements are done in Abuja, not Lagos.

Therefore, relocating such agencies to Lagos would only increase their costs in terms of overhead, operations, logistics, etc. And lastly, when another northerner becomes president after Tinubu, those agencies would be returned to Abuja again. By then, what has Nigeria gained by such wasteful back and forth?
It’s time to rethink our federal structure!
