Everywhere you look in Nigeria, there’s a uniformed man or woman armed with a gun, yet the spate of insecurity continues to worsen. Is it that our armed security personnel are insufficient or the challenges bedeviling them are simply insurmountable?
The Federal Government, yesterday inaugurated yet another security outfit called MINES MARSHAL charged with the onerous task of securing the nation’s mining sites and assets. It is an agency with 2,200 armed personnel drawn mainly from the NSCDC. It has it is an independent command and control center with its headquarters domiciled at the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development.
In other words, the current minister of Solid Minerals Development, Mr. Dele Alake would be the Control Officer of this novel security outfit. This implies that Mr. Dele Alake would have 2,200 armed personnel at his disposal in the course of his official assignment.

In a power-hungry political system such as Nigeria, this means extra power for the Minister. How he navigates this agency to achieve peace and security within the mining industry in Nigeria in the coming months and years remains to be seen. Until then, let us watch and see.
