President Bola Tinubu has extended congratulations to Justice Stella Anukam following her re-election to the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights for another six-year term. The re-election took place during the African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting Executive Council held in Accra, Ghana, on Friday.
Justice Anukam, who earned her law degree from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife in 1984 and was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in August 1985, is also a chartered secretary and arbitrator. Her previous roles include serving as Director of Special Programmes at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and Director of the International and Comparative Law Department at the Federal Ministry of Justice.

President Tinubu praised Justice Anukam for her significant contributions to human rights jurisprudence across Africa. He urged her to continue leveraging her expertise at the African Court. The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting qualified Nigerians in international roles, emphasizing Nigeria’s pivotal role in the global arena.

The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, established by African states, works to safeguard human and people’s rights across the continent, complementing the functions of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. Composed of eleven judges elected by the AU Assembly, Nigeria ratified the Protocol establishing the Court in 2004.
