Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress Onyeka Onwenu has reportedly died at the age of 72. The news broke on Tuesday night, reporting that she had passed away after performing at an event in Banana Island, Lagos State.
According to reports, Onwenu slumped after her performance at the birthday ceremony of Stella Okoli, the owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals. She was later confirmed dead at a hospital in Victoria Island, though her family has yet to confirm the death.
Beyond her illustrious career in the arts, Onyeka Onwenu also made significant contributions to politics. She served as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development.

Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Onwenu began her music career in the 1980s, releasing her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981. She continued to release numerous albums and singles, including the hit song “One Love.”

Onwenu’s contributions to Nigerian society have been widely recognized. In 2011, she was awarded the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR). Additionally, she was recognized as one of the most influential women in Nigeria by various organizations.
