The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has cautioned Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy against making divisive remarks perceived as targeting the Igbo community in his ongoing feud with celebrity businessman Cubana Chief Priest.

The altercation began after Burna Boy referred to Cubana Chief Priest as “Owerri Rick Ross” in a social media post, which many viewed as a slight. Cubana Chief Priest responded with allegations that Burna Boy owed money for jewelry, escalating the dispute into a public drama. HURIWA condemned Burna Boy’s comments, particularly references to “Igbo voice” and other remarks interpreted as ethnic jabs, describing them as offensive and detrimental to national unity.

In a statement on Sunday, HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, warned against injecting tribal sentiments into personal disputes. The group urged Burna Boy to avoid language that could perpetuate stereotypes or alienate any ethnic group, stressing the importance of promoting unity in a diverse nation like Nigeria.

“As a global cultural ambassador, Burna Boy represents Nigeria’s rich heritage and must use his influence to foster unity, not division. His comments about the Igbo community are uncharitable and demand an immediate retraction and apology,” the statement read.

HURIWA also advised Cubana Chief Priest to ensure his responses remain constructive, urging both parties to focus on resolving their differences without inflaming ethnic tensions.

The association called on public figures to leverage their platforms to promote national cohesion, warning that tribal rhetoric could exacerbate divisions and hinder efforts to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges.
