With the election of Senator Athan Nneji Achonu, the Labour Party in Imo State has clearly made its decision known.
Famously described as the “One-arm General,” due to his fractured right arm, this former senator defeated a retired Major General, Jack Ogunewe to clinch the Labour Party’s governorship ticket.
Achonu polled 134 votes to beat his closest rival, Major General Jack Ogunewe (rtd) who scored 121 votes.
While I congratulate the One-arm General, let me use this opportunity to advise him not to spend so much on his election bid as it is going to be a failed ambition. There are several reasons why he would most likely fail.
First, his zone of Mbano is the smallest senatorial zone in Imo State which has remained under the iron grip of Uzodinma’s APC for the last four years after Ifeanyi Ararume defected back to the party. Apart from that, the zone will not be enough to fetch him a decisive victory.
Going by the geopolitics of Imo State, the Orlu zone which is the largest as well as Governor Hope Uzodinma’s home base will most definitely have no other option but to rally around their man.
This is because the coming governorship election seems to lack any real popular candidate capable of giving the Omuma-born governor a run for his money.
As the second largest zone, the Owerri senatorial zone will be a battleground for the three big parties of APC, PDP, and Labour Party. This is because it is the home zone for the PDP candidate – Senator Samuel Anyanwu.
Unfortunately, SamDaddy lacks the popularity to deliver in this area. It will therefore leave the vast majority of voters with no option but to swing in any direction of their choice.
In conclusion, I believe the Labour Party has clearly lost its golden opportunity to wrest power from the APC. Athan Achonu does not have enough popularity or credibility to give APC the needed fight.

In addition, the fact that he had been a member of both the PDP and APC at different times before running for the Labour Party makes him no different from the regular Nigerian politician who is more anxious for power than service! Nothing really serious to look out for. Imo’s fate is sealed!!!
