Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, assuming his role as the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has expressed a resolute position against the occurrence of coups in countries within the West African sub-region.
During his inaugural address at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government in Guinea-Bissau, Tinubu underscored his dedication to regional integration by prioritizing political stability, peace, security, and the strengthening of ECOWAS institutions.
Emphasizing that democracy and good governance are fundamental pillars for sustainable development and peace, Tinubu lamented the emerging trend of military coups in West Africa, where the popular mandate of the people has been usurped by armed forces. He called upon ECOWAS to firmly defend democracy and expressed the resolve not to accept any further instances of coups in the region.

Tinubu also acknowledged the challenges in managing democracy but highlighted it as the most favorable system of government worldwide. Taking over from President Umaro Embalo of Guinea-Bissau, Tinubu assumed the ECOWAS chairmanship, marking his first engagement within the African continent since assuming office as Nigeria’s president on May 29.
