The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has expressed concerns regarding biased reporting surrounding the ongoing court case involving Alliance Hospital and its Medical Director, Dr. Christopher Otabor.
According to HURIWA, certain media outlets, termed “5th Columnists,” have skewed the allegations of illegal organ harvesting, potentially maligning the hospital before a fair legal determination is reached.
In a press statement, HURIWA emphasized the importance of professional objectivity and responsible journalism, citing Section 36(5) of the Nigerian Constitution, which presumes innocence until proven guilty. They highlighted Dr. Otabor’s defense, which asserts the legality of the organ donation facilitated by Alliance Hospital.
HURIWA commended Alliance Hospital for its contribution to affordable kidney transplant services in Nigeria, reducing the need for costly treatments abroad. They praised the hospital’s collaboration with Indian medical experts, which enhanced Nigeria’s healthcare capabilities.
The organization defended Dr. Otabor’s reputation, citing his international recognition and contributions to medical science. They suspected vested interests seeking to monopolize the organ transplant market may be behind the biased reporting.
HURIWA called for calm and urged stakeholders to allow the court to reach a verdict based on merit, free from external pressures. They advised Dr. Otabor to pursue legal action against entities attempting to defame him without evidence.
