Emir Sanusi: A Date With History

Emir Sanusi: A Date With History

While Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was in Port Harcourt discussing the petroleum economy and Nigeria’s stunted growth index yesterday, his home state of Kano was a beehive of activities, preparatory to his reinstatement.

In setting the ball rolling, the Kano State House of Assembly abrogated the amended law, breaking the old Kano emirate into five separate units and subsequently reverting the newly created smaller emirates to local chiefdoms.

The House reconstituted Kano State as a single emirate to be ruled by one Emir, as opposed to the five instituted by former governor Ganduje. Consequently, the House visited the grounds upon which former emir Sanusi was dethroned and reconfirmed him as the bonafide Emir of Kano!!

Former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, Nigeria

Notwithstanding the court order barring the state governor, Abba Yusuf, from handing Sanusi his staff of office as the Emir of Kano, the former CBN Governor would be traditionally welcomed to Kano today with pomp and pageantry. Today promises to be a big day in Kano State. A day that would witness the reinstatement of a deposed Emir and a reconstitution of Nigeria’s largest emirate. This is coming more than 4 years after the dethronement of Sanusi.

While I applaud the courage of the incumbent governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf in reinstating Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the governor must, however, develop the ability to tolerate the Emir’s dispassionate remarks on public finance and economy. Sanusi is not one to shy away from public discourses.

Judging by his scathing remarks on Nigeria’s overdependence on oil in Port Harcourt yesterday, it’s clear that the fire in Sanusi on issues of public analysis is inextinguishable. Nothing can quench it, you either like him to the high heavens or hate him to Hades. Sanusi is not ready to change, whoever harbours him as an Emir must live above board or be ready to be dragged like a Yamaha generator

      Congratulations, Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi!
