The Joint Union Congress of the Police Service Commission (PSC) has strongly refuted allegations of fraud and misconduct in the recent recruitment of police constables. In a press conference on Wednesday, the Union condemned the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for what it described as baseless and irresponsible accusations, urging the public to reject these claims.
The Union’s statement comes in response to a growing dispute between the PSC and the NPF over the recruitment process, which the Union insists is the constitutional duty of the PSC as per the 1999 Constitution and the Police Service Commission Act of 2001, a stance affirmed by a Supreme Court ruling.
The Union criticized the NPF’s approach, accusing it of resorting to media trials and undermining public trust. They asserted that the PSC’s recruitment process was transparent and conducted with integrity, emphasizing the use of modern technology and rigorous selection criteria to ensure fairness.
The PSC Union also highlighted attempts by the NPF to interfere with the recruitment process, including an alleged manipulation to add over 1,000 names to the recruitment list. They claimed this was a calculated move to discredit the PSC’s efforts and shift focus from the NPF’s failings, particularly its readiness to train recruits.
In a significant call to action, the Union urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to relieve the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of his position. They argued that the IGP’s actions have compromised the integrity of the PSC and hindered its mandate to manage police personnel.
Furthermore, the Union addressed the leadership vacuum at the PSC following the removal of its chairman, Dr. Solomon Arase, which they linked to political conspiracy and attempts to discredit the Commission. They expressed no confidence in the nomination of Chief Onyemuche Nnamani as Secretary to the Commission, citing his lack of qualifications and alleged attempts to undermine the recruitment process.
Despite these challenges, the Union reaffirmed its confidence in Dr. Solomon Arase, praising his efforts to enhance the PSC’s independence and efficiency. They called for a forensic review of both the PSC’s and the NPF’s recruitment lists by an independent authority to resolve the allegations.
