President Tinubu has suspended the Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu over allegations of financial impropriety.
The suspended minister was alleged to have ordered the payment of over 585 million naira from the office of the Accountant General to a private account. This is clearly against the laid down procedure for public procurement. If found guilty, the act is punishable by law. In the meantime, the EFCC has been mandated to investigate the entire affair to establish the true story.
However, judging by the information within the public domain, one could see this is clearly a trap usually set for naive political appointees, especially ministers. With Beta Edu’s meteoric rise politically, it was clear that many heavyweights were not pleased with her growth. Some of them saw her as a threat, especially when she was holding one of the most “lucrative” offices in the country.
With a budget of about 60 billion naira, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation is one of the biggest spenders in the current political dispensation. Starting from Buhari’s administration, the ministry was designed as a conduit through which money was expended without constitutional approval.
Like the humongous NDDC, the Humanitarian Affairs ministry is a special-purpose vehicle for ferrying out cash to designated entities with little or no explanation to anyone. It’s therefore not surprising that a lot of interests are up in arms against the Beta Edu for holding such an exalted seat.

In summary, Beta Edu is a victim of her unexplainable political rise, greed, and a highly corrupt system where politicians are kings. She has bitten the dust of the earth.
