HURIWA Faults Speaker’s Term for Herder-Farmer Violence

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has criticized the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, for his use of the term “herders-farmers clashes,” stating that the term inaccurately portrays the situation as clashes instead of armed herders’ terrorism against farmers.

Responding to Tajudeen’s claim that these clashes resulted in 60,000 deaths over 22 years, HURIWA urged the speaker to focus on prosecuting and punishing the killer herders rather than discussing casualty figures.

HURIWA Slams Tinubu’s Speech, Calls for Concrete Actions

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s speech delivered on Monday, describing it as academic and detached from the harsh realities faced by the 130 million impoverished Nigerians.

HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, in a statement on Tuesday, expressed dissatisfaction with Tinubu’s failure to present plans for the revival of public refineries, despite the previous APC government’s substantial investment in renovating them.

Furthermore, the group accused Tinubu of lacking a clear strategy to apprehend and prosecute crude oil thieves, responsible for a staggering loss of $10 billion to Nigeria in just seven months. “Between January and July, Nigeria lost an average of 437,000 barrels of oil daily, stolen by criminal entities tapping pipelines onshore and offshore in the Niger Delta region”.

HURIWA further emphasized that the stolen oil’s value exceeded $10 billion, equivalent to N4.3 trillion, which significantly impacted Nigeria’s external reserves and revenue.

Additionally, the group called for politicians to set an example by cutting excessive spending while urging Nigerians to persevere amid increasing costs of living following Tinubu’s removal of the petrol subsidy.

As critics claim that Tinubu’s measures lacked practicality and failed to address crucial issues directly, HURIWA urged politicians to take decisive actions to protect Nigerians from further economic deprivation and starvation due to the current administration’s policies.

Building Collapse: HURIWA Calls FCTA to Prosecute Corrupt Officials

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to prosecute corrupt officials who compromise building standards and approve structures in flood-prone areas.

The group, in a statement by its National Coordinator; Emmanuel Onwubiko expressed concern over the continuous erection of houses and estates in flood channels within the FCT, stating that without the connivance of some government officials, estate owners cannot successfully complete their structures.

The group also expressed concerns over the recurring collapse of buildings in Abuja, where a collapsed five-storey structure collapsed on Monday afternoon.

HURIWA Seeks End to Senator Bassey’s Political Persecution

Civil rights advocacy group; Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, (HURIWA), on Monday, asked the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Governor Umo Eno, and his cronies to stop the political persecution of the candidate of the Young Progressive Party (YPP) in the just-concluded governorship election in the state, Senator Bassey Albert.

HURIWA, in a statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, asked that the state administration respects pluralism of political opinions and the rights of political opponents to challenge the outcome of an election at the Petitions Tribunal without being harassed, victimized, and intimidated by state forces and security agents allegedly working to ingratiate themselves to the new powers that be in Akwa Ibom State.

The group cautioned Gov Eno to call his people and party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to order and immediately halt the visible threat to the life of Senator Albert because he has the courage to challenge Gov Eno’s declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission as the winner of the poll.

HURIWA acknowledges that although there is no empirical evidence linking the person of the Akwa Ibom State Governor; His Excellency Mr. Umo Eno to this latest aggression against the YPP Governorship Candidate and the main challenger of the governor’s victory in the 2023 governorship race, as the Chief Security Officer of Akwa Ibom State, the bulk of the responsibility and legal obligations to protect citizens of his dear state is on his desk. The governor must create the enabling environment for political pluralism to thrive in Akwa Ibom State.

HURIWA warned that the Governor and his Party would be held responsible if anything untoward happens to Senator Albert because the Governor is the Chief Security Officer of Akwa Ibom state while at the same time called on the new Inspector General of Police to rein in his men in Akwa Ibom and stop them from being used allegedly by the Akwa Ibom state government as a tool of oppression against petitioners at the governorship tribunal.

HURIWA’s Onwubiko said, “There is video evidence of the oppressive regime ongoing in Akwa Ibom state under the watch of Governor Umo Eno. Just on June 20, 2023, Senator Albert’s witness was harassed by alleged state-sponsored thugs and security agents at the Tribunal at the State Judiciary Complex, Uyo, and meters from the Government House and almost opposite a police division.

“It is ironic that the police stormed the venue and wanted to arrest Senator Albert’s witness against the governor. This is shameful and the Nigeria Police Force should be most ashamed.

“The YPP candidate, as part of his petitions at the tribunal, tendered the academic credentials of the PDP candidate from the University of Uyo to advance his allegation that he (Eno) was kicked out of the university over alleged fake school certificates but gunshots and heavily armed presence were used by the governor to intimidate the witness.

“This is broad-day oppression in a democratic setting and this kind of tyrannical behaviour has no place in our civilized world. The YPP has already written a petition to the Department of State Services on the matter and the apparent threat to the life of Senator Albert.

“Senator Albert is a victim of political persecution by the PDP-led Akwa Ibom State Government. His contrived prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over vehicles he was given which is deemed as money laundering is a frame-up allegation contrived by the EFCC office in Uyo controlled by the office of the governor.

“Approaching the court to demand his sacking because he dumped the PDP for the YPP when the former shunned democracy and hijacked the governorship ticket for the highest bidder and install his stooge in the person of Eno is also nothing but political witch-hunt by the PDP.

“We call for an end to this political persecution for whatever reason and ask that the state administration respects pluralism of political opinions. Also, part of the persecution is the spreading of fake news about the Appeal Court’s verdict in which journalists allegedly working for the Akwa Ibom governor misreported that the court ordered his re-arrest when the contrary is the case as can be seen from the enrolled order of the Court of Appeal.

“The PDP in Akwa Ibom state has used the judiciary, the police, and all other state instruments to persecute Senator Albert and this must stop forthwith.”

Oil in Nasarawa: Buhari Does It Again

First, it was at Kolmani, in Bauchi/Gombe States, and now President Muhammadu Buhari has struck again. In a region some people have said was fated never to produce even a cup of oil, the second exploration exercise was flagged off this week.

The spud-in ceremony of the Ebenyi-A, Middle Benue Trough, was conducted virtually on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, pedestaling President Buhari as the leader under whom the oil wealth of the country snowballed into humongous quantity, guaranteeing the prosperity of Nigeria for now and the future.

“I am encouraged by the enormous work done by NNPC Limited to exploit the prospects in the Middle Benue Trough, leading to the event of today.

“I congratulate NNPC Limited, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, and other partners for their immense contributions towards making this day and this event possible.”

It was possible for a less nationalist leader, who also hails from the northern part of the country, to start gloating about the balance of forces that oil finds in that part of the country has wrought. But not Buhari.

He thinks of Nigeria, rather than the region, and thus declared: “I am happy that the consequent positive outcomes of these drilling campaigns will lead to greater prosperity for our people and especially enhance overall energy security for our country. No doubt, the surrounding communities will particularly benefit from the value that will be created by the exploration and eventual production activities.”

Greater prosperity for our people, and especially enhance overall energy security for our country. That’s the way to go, the way to think Nigeria and be the father of all.

Right at that point, the President was also futuristic in thought, borrowing from the experience of environmental degradation in the areas the country had prospected for oil in the past. He counseled: “I am also admonishing NNPC Limited and its partners to take due care of the environmental consequences of these oil exploration activities and to mitigate the negative effects.”

Oil exploration is often accompanied by social unrest and militancy, thus it was very germane for the President to address the Government and people of Nasarawa State- the host community- “for their unfettered support and collaboration towards the success of this exploration campaign.” Indeed, without their support and cooperation, oil would become doom, and not a boom.

Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of NNPC Ltd, Mallam Mele Kolo Kyari, described the spud-in as “an important milestone in our efforts to harness the abundant natural resources of our country.

“This is a special occasion for us at the NNPC Ltd and the Nigeria Upstream Regulatory Commission, the Nasarawa people, and Nigeria as we spud the first well in the middle Benue Trough while at the same time executing Mr. President’s express mandate for us to pursue exploration in the frontier inland Basins with vigor. The mandate no doubt targets growth of hydrocarbon reserves in our country with the ultimate aim of enhancing national energy security and associated economic benefits to our people.”

Enhancing national energy security and associated economic benefits to our people. Did you hear of regionalism or the North? No. It was all about Nigeria. “National energy security,” and not solely about the people of a region, though they equally stand to benefit tremendously from the development. If only we can think of Nigeria more, our country would be better.

Going down memory lane, the GCEO said exploration in the mid-Benue trough commenced over a decade ago. “Since 2010, we have executed several geophysical activities, applied niche technologies, and conducted very integrated studies leading to the firming up of the Ebenyi-A well. Indeed, our findings are very indicative of potential commercial hydrocarbon discovery in this area.

“Today, we have mobilized the drilling rig to this site, here in Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. We are optimistic that the positive outcome of this campaign will contribute to the National aspiration of increasing our hydrocarbon reserves from 37 billion barrels to 50 billion barrels, in the short to medium term and increase our crude oil production to a target of 3m barrels.”

Just like the President, Mallam Kyari was also thinking environment. “I would like to use this opportunity to assure our stakeholders that we will conduct this operation with the utmost care and attention to health, safety, and the environment. We understand the responsibility that comes with exploring and exploiting natural resources, and we are committed to doing so in a way that will best benefit our country and its people.

“As NNPC Ltd we commit to leading practices and highest standards in the course of our operations and would be engaging in Impact Assessment studies during and after operations to mitigate possible effects of our exploration activities. We will also engage the host communities as major stakeholders and execute Community Assisted Projects in line with NNPC Ltd Corporate Social Responsibility policies and provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

“As we witnessed in the successful discovery of oil and gas in the Kolmani River Field, we are here today to celebrate another key milestone in Nigeria’s oil and gas history.”

A key milestone in Nigeria’s oil and gas history. Not Northern, not regional, not Nasarawa, but Nigeria’s oil and gas history. Those are the rhetorics that build and enhance a nation, not divisive, sectional tendencies.

Engineer Gbenga Komolafe, NUPRC Chief Executive, in his Goodwill Message, said the event marked another milestone in the decades of hydrocarbon exploration in the inland frontier basins and underscores the effort government is making in ensuring that requisite investments are made in Frontier Basin exploration in Nigeria.

He then gave honour to whom it was due, paying glowing tribute to President Muhammadu Buhari for his commitment to mitigate energy poverty, create shared prosperity and enthrone sustainable growth in the Nigerian Economy.

“We fervently believe that the outcome of the drilling activity will usher in wealth creation and massive economic prosperity for the people of Nasarawa State and the Nation in general.”

For the people of Nasarawa State, and the Nation in general. Thinking Nigeria. He said one of the key regulatory focus of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) is to grow reserves from the current 37 Billion barrels of oil to 40 Billion barrels of oil by 2030.

“The PIA 2021 provided the regulatory support and framework for achieving this objective by providing for the Frontier Exploration Fund which the NNPC Limited can utilize to deploy world-class cutting-edge technologies to de-risk exploration in the frontier basins. The spud-in of Ebenyi-A fields will benefit from the fund and this will significantly contribute to boosting our oil reserves and facilitate sustainable domestic energy security.”

The spud-in ceremony had a touch of royalty and prayers, as the Chairman of Nasarawa State Council of Traditional Rulers, Justice Sidi Bage Muhammed 1, used the opportunity to thank President Buhari, all stakeholders in the oil industry, the people of the State, and prayed that the development would signpost the beginning of new things.

President Buhari is an oil man, who served as Petroleum Minister for over three years in the 1970s, holds the oil portfolio now, and remains squeaky clean. His footprints loom large in the oil sector of the country. And those footprints will remain indelible.

The Ihedioha Threat

Emeka Ihedioha does not threaten anyone’s ambition in the PDP, it is rather those outside the PDP that is threatened by the likelihood of Ihedioha’s emergence as the governorship candidate of that Party.

A political Party can be compared to a professional football team, they do not change their winning team, and when they do, they will experience a downward spiral in fortunes.

Politics is a serious business. It is not a game of emotions; it is a business in which you must plan and work to win or you lose and be left to lick your wounds. For a serious political Party, its sole business is to win power, because it is in winning power that it can implement its programs or manifestos.

The Ihedioha Threat — Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha

General perspective

If the Likud Party in Israel had been swayed by the opposition sponsored propaganda about Netanyahu holding too firmly to the Party or having served too long as the Party leader, the Party might not have returned to power in the next decade.

But because they understood that Benjamin Netanyahu is their winning magic, even with personal weak points, they stuck to him, and in a matter of days, the Likud Party will be leading a coalition of right-leaning Parties to form a government.

You may say; “well, Likud had been in power for more than a decade through Netanyahu”, but I can talk about Marie Le Pen who took over the National Rally Party from her father and has continued to grow that Party to a point where the Party is making good inroads into Elysee palace.

I can also tell you about Anwar Bin Ibrahim who led his People’s Justice Party for about two decades until a few days ago when he finally led form the government in Malaysia.

In Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari has always been a presidential candidate since 2003 when he filed his papers to contest for the presidency. He tried unsuccessfully thrice and in 2015 when a merger of opposition Parties happened, he was the easy choice of the delegates at their primaries, because he had the winning magic.

Ihedioha as a threat?

In Imo State, any ruling Party would invest anything to stop Ihedioha from clinching the gubernatorial ticket of the PDP, because they know that fielding Emeka Ihedioha as PDP’s governorship candidate goes halfway in returning the PDP to power.

In 2019, as the leader of the major Party’s media, I had a simple strategy; “Do everything to stop Ihedioha from getting a PDP guber ticket.” When he eventually did, I told everyone close to me that it was going to be a tough battle to defeat the PDP in the governorship election.

I tactically left Samdaddy alone and prayed silently that he was elected as the PDP’s governorship candidate because I knew that he would have been an ofe nkupu for our then Action Alliance.

I am not surprised that members of the 3R media gang are copying my 2019 strategy by giving Samdaddy some tactical support and dumping all sorts of mud on Ihedioha. That’s because they know who their problem is.

Ihedioha is an asset

Ihedioha as a governorship candidate of PDP will be hard to defeat though the Labour Party would have taken over the federal government by that time. Imolites will not vote for just about anybody because he is of Labour Party, and the APC knows this.

That’s why they are neither focusing their fight on the numerous candidates who have indicated an interest in the governorship nor on Samdaddy who is the only other person to have shown genuine interest in challenging Ihedioha for the PDP ticket.

Ihedioha is an asset to the PDP and over the last two decades and more, he has helped in no small measure to solidify the structures of that Party in Nigeria and his brief stint as Imo governor under that Party’s platform has further enhanced the acceptability of that Party across the State.

When people talk about him holding the Party’s ticket for a record three times, that’s the kind of thing I would have written and championed against him if I was in APC, and that’s because any opposition to the PDP in Imo State would do anything and pay anything to stop the immediate past governor from being on the ballot.

Imo PDP and Attempted ‘Gulakization’

I wouldn’t have been interested in the drama playing out in the Imo PDP as it concerns their Presidential Campaign Council list, because even if the most loved Imo man in history like Dee Sam Mbakwe is brought back to life today to lead a presidential campaign for any other person but Peter Obi, that campaign would still be a major flop.

Every true Nigerian who wishes for anything good to come to Nigeria has made up his mind on voting for Peter Obi. My interest in the PDP Presidential Campaign in Imo State is basically to advocate for some kind of integrity in politics.

People shouldn’t try to reap where they did not sow, and politicians shouldn’t approach politicking as an extension of their 419 backgrounds.

Imo PDP; Samdaddy and Ihedioha

Senator Samdaddy’s belief that he could snatch the Imo PDP structure from those who laboured to sustain the Party all these years, even when it didn’t seem there was anything left to be fought for in the Party, shows him off as a faithless and highly dishonest political leader.

He is also an opportunist, who probably had made some fortuitous inroads into political relevance, and believes that political leadership is merely a game of luck rather than of hard and intentional work and investments.

Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha may not be my best of friends, and I do not even belong to the same political Party as him, but it would amount to rewarding indolence, dishonesty, and double-dealership for Samdaddy to be allowed to sneak his way into the PDP governorship candidacy.

Multiple shreds of evidence show that he neither worked for the Party’s success in the 2019 elections nor supported the Party after it was booted out of power most controversially in 2020.

If there is anywhere the Amaimo-born politician should be staking a strong claim to, it is in the APC, particularly, within the Camphone faction of that Party, because that’s where he made his major investments.

Imo PDP PCC is a footnote to 2023 Governorship Primaries

The fallout of the Imo PDP PCC inauguration or unveiling should be a foretaste of what the March 2023 governorship primaries of the PDP will look like.

Samdaddy will certainly want to use his office as the Party’s National Secretary to smuggle in names of his lackeys as delegates and committee members, but the real owners of that Party in Imo State will resist him.

As they did during the primaries earlier this year, they are sure to triumph, unless the Party wants to be swept off by the APC and LP in the main election.

The truth is that any governorship candidate that emerges from the PDP outside the endorsement and support of the caliber of officials who are in charge of the PDP in Imo State, will not stand the slightest chance of winning the governorship election in Imo State.

This is not calling the 2023 governorship election for the PDP, no matter whom they present, but it is without a doubt that a PDP candidate produced by the real PDP leadership in the State will have a very good chance at reclaiming the Imo governorship seat.

Watching the video of the press conference purportedly called by Imo PDP Stakeholders to disown the PCC list, you would know that the Samdaddy camp is empty and toothless.

Apart from Hon. Ngozi Ogbu whose continued relevance in Imo politics after his stint at the Imo House of Assembly was sustained by Chief Ihedioha, there is no other person of political quality in that video.

The makeup of that purported PDP Stakeholders group buried whatever hope anyone might have that there will be real competition for the PDP governorship ticket in 2023.

Samdaddy should reconcile with his Party or be bold enough to make his affiliation with the APC formal, instead of wasting his time in trying to reinvent the Gulakization of Imo politics in the PDP.

Soludo Rather Confirmed Obi Invested Anambra Money Well

While appearing on television yesterday evening, the current governor of Anambra State, Professor Charles Soludo made a comment that is understood to be about the multibillion Naira and multimillion-dollar investments and savings made by Mr. Peter Obi when he was governor of Anambra State.

Governor Soludo said that those investments are “now worth close to nothing”. This statement from Soludo is not an attack on Peter Obi but a validation of the Agulu-born multibillionaire’s prudence in the management of Anambra’s resources.

Soludo would have been called to question if he had claimed that Peter Obi didn’t make any investments. Peter Obi made good and well-thought-out investments, but, like some fortunate children whose parents bequeathed good fortunes, Obi’s successor descended on this investment and made mincemeat of it.

Those who are mischievous enough to blame Peter Obi for supporting Obiano as his successor are not being fair to themselves. Peter Obi is a human being; he couldn’t have had any talent for deconstructing the new fantasies of the man he partly groomed in the bank.

Probably, because the man came about bad associations. Peter Obi also didn’t disturb his successor, he allowed him to run his government however he deemed fit.

I thank Governor Chukwuma Soludo for this affirmation and I urge Nigerians to vote for the man who will invest their money rightly and not the man who will squander it.

It is one thing to invest and another thing to manage the investment. For instance, I know a man whose father left hundreds of millions of Naira worth of investments for, but the young man squandered these investments and is looking worse than some of us who were not fortunate to get even a pin from our fathers.

That the man whom I will like to call Chukwuma squandered his father’s beautiful investments which included landed properties, shares, etc, doesn’t mean that the father made a bad investment, but it rather shows that the son, his successor was a bad manager or even an efulefu.

IMO WEST: Why Labour Party Will Win

Early yesterday evening, someone drew my attention to what appears to be a purported investigation into the chances of the candidates for the Imo West Senatorial District as a planted piece of news in a local tabloid.

That sponsored piece of journalistic garbage was aimed at downplaying the surging popularity of the Labour Party’s candidate for Imo West Senatorial District by faltering and jittering candidates of the two opposition parties in the Orlu zone.

The automobile dealer has the advantage of name recognition in most of the LGAs in Imo West. The Labour Party in Imo West also boasts of a hybrid political makeup, with formidable grassroots mobilizers from different political parties and political families united behind the Party.

For a good number of political old horses who are disenchanted with the state of political affairs in Imo West, Labour Party provides a good vehicle for them to effectively relaunch themselves and reassert their political prowess.

Also, a good number of upcoming politicians, those that may be described as Generation Z are more inclined towards the Labour Party.

Elections are very dynamic political processes, and it is only a neophyte that would call an election outcome four clear months before election day, but if we must go along with the lousy fiction of that local soft-sale, then, the most accurate headline would have read something like; LP LEAVES PDP, APC GASPING, AS AHIZE CRUISES TO VICTORY.

Certainly, the Labour Party will need to increase the tempo of its campaign and mobilization efforts to ensure that the winning target of 80% of votes cast is not only met, but possibly surpassed.

It is very amusing to hear people try to denigrate the achievements of the anti-corruption war under President Muhammadu Buhari. But facts are stubborn things. The more you try to deny or condemn them, the bolder they stare at you in the face. Boldly, even rudely.

President Buhari and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) have had three guiding principles in running the nation since 2015: we will secure the country, revive the economy, and fight corruption.

But here we are. Trudging on. The job is not fully done, but it is being done, and Nigeria is there, united, and steady.

The economy is a big challenge and has always been. But you know one thing? We have always talked of a mono-economy, anchored on oil. Whenever oil prices crash in the international market, the Nigerian economy simply crashes with it.

But then came Buhari, who redirected our priorities towards agriculture, ICT, taxation, and the like. The result? Oil is now a negligible part of our Gross Domestic Product (GDP). But where permanent critics of anything good vent plenty of spleen is the anti-corruption war, which they try to dismiss as ineffective.

Are there more corrupt people under the APC Government?

I felt sad watching a lawyer I respected so much talking on television early this week, and claiming that there are more corrupt people in the country today than we had under 16 years of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) administration. A sweeping statement that was empirical in no way.

The lawyer used to be with APC. Brilliant, dogged, and committed, one of my favorites on TV. But after the presidential primaries of the party and the emergence of a Muslim-Muslim ticket, he decamped to the PDP and became a spokesman for Atiku Abubakar. Fine.

We can always change positions on certain fundamental things in life, depending on the exigencies of the moment. But to throw overboard all that you had believed in, and robustly defended, is rather unconscionable. Someone who had always defended the anti-corruption war now claims there are more corrupt people under the APC.

The interviewer would not let him go scot-free. He was asked to put a figure to it, in terms of certified corrupt people. And our normally suave friend began to ramble, going into labyrinthine arguments that ended up tying him completely into a web.

He looked pathetic at the end of it all, and my heart went out to him. Yes, you can defend your new boss without repudiating all that you had stood for in the very recent past. It does your reputation no good.

The Facts of President Buhari’s Anti-corruption war

One of the ways you measure the success of the anti-corruption war is the number of convictions you have recorded. And this has been incremental since 2016. There are many agencies involved in the war, but let’s just take the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In 2016, the EFCC recorded 195 convictions for different economic crimes. The following year, the figure dropped slightly to 189. But in 2018, it shot up astronomically to 312, and there has been no looking back.

The year 2019 saw the anti-graft agency successfully prosecuting 1,280 people, followed by 976 in 2020. In 2021, the figure was 2,220.

Kindly compare this trend to what happened in the previous epoch. 2010, 68 convictions. 2011, 67. In 2012, 87, 2013, 117, and 2014, there were 126 convictions. This shows that EFCC got more pep and more verve under Buhari.

Yet, what do you hear in the country: we don’t see anything being done. Really? The only blind man is not the one who can’t see, but also the one who refuses to see.

When they say they don’t see the successes of the anti-corruption war, and you bring these kinds of facts, and you challenge them to contradict or demolish them with their facts. They then begin to ramble, like my friend on television.

There’s a saying: “If you don’t say you are, nobody will say thou art.” If you refuse to see what is being done despite the unimpeachable statistics, then you are of all men most miserable, and to be pitied.

Some people go to great lengths trying to prove that Buhari has done nothing. They close their eyes to strides in infrastructure; the roads, rail, bridges, airports, and many others, the convictions for graft, and the diversified economy.

One can only wish them luck, “though seeing, they do not see; though hearing they do not hear or understand.” The country moves on without them.

All Souls’ Day has been observed on November 2 since the 11th century. The day was established by AbbotOdilo, who was the Benedictine Abbot of Cluny for 54 years until he died in 1048 AD.

In the earlier period, All Souls’ Day was observed on various dates.
Some denominations, like the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Easter Catholic Church, and the Eastern Lutheran Church, observe All Souls’ Day during the Easter Season. Similarly, the East Syriac Rite observed the day on the Friday before the Great Feast.

Significance of All Souls’ Day

All Souls’ Day is the last of the Allhallowtide triduum celebrated in the Western Christian, which begins on All Saints’ Eve on October 31. The church and priests across the globe organize a mass by wearing vestments of different colours, with each colour signifying something distinct:

White – Hope of Resurrection

“Filmmakers need to be encouraged through setting up an interest-free loan and reduce the requirements. This is because most of us filmmakers don’t have any landed property to give as collateral for loans, we just want assistance from the government.

“In the United States, every State government has a Film Commission working to attract film production in their state to help increase their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), create employment, and boost their tourism potentials while putting their state on the world stage.

“For instance, an average of 200 films are made yearly in Nollywood with an average budget of 10 million naira just in production; that is 2 billion naira. Benue state government can attract part of that money to the state.

“If the government gives filmmakers some incentives, and takes care of their logistics, they will come and shoot in Benue state. Apart from Lagos state, Delta state is the only state that seems to understand this economic premise”, Miss Tracy explained.

Furthermore, she lauded the focus and tenacity shown by the Film Industry in the state while urging the up-and-coming artists not to be discouraged in pursuing their goals, pointing out that with dedication, breakthroughs will surely come.

However, the hybrid cluster of talent and hard work paid glowing tributes to other entertainment giants of Benue origin, like Tuface Idibia, Francis Atela, Terry G, and Kiddwaya among others, whom she expressed delight have continued to place the State on international recognition in the entertainment and creative industry, saying more gifted and talented young people must also be encouraged to rise.

TEM Luxury is Going to Be A Global Brand;- Tracy Member

Tracy Member; the founder and creative director of TEM Luxury could be described as the epitome of resilience, innovativeness, and hard work. The industrious and result-oriented entrepreneur has for the last four years continued to demonstrate her relevance and passion for the already over-saturated fashion and clothing industry.

These were evident in a media chat with ken Gbados of The World Satellite Magazine on the sidelines of the recently held Dawalk Fashion Show in Abuja where she highlighted her journey in the Fashion and Clothing Industry, together with her aspirations for the years ahead.

TEM Luxury has been in the Fashion and Clothing business for four years and was among the brands showcased on the runway for ‘Dawalk Fashion Show; what does this mean to you as a person?

Nigeria is a creative hotspot and this can be seen through the rapidly growing fashion industry. As Africa’s most populous country and with its powerful demographics, Nigeria is positioned firmly in the heart of Africa’s fashion scene. Several non-Nigerian designers have openly admitted to being inspired by Nigerian fashion.

No doubt, fashion events have played a crucial role in exposing Nigerian fashion designers and providing a platform for them to mix with their international counterparts. So as a young entrepreneur being opportune to showcase TEM Luxury’s beautiful outfits and designs on the runway for Dawalk Fashion Show is a very big deal for me and we are looking forward to bigger events in the future.

Again, as a person, four years in this business is a very big deal because I have been through a lot of challenges and therefore super grateful to God for where we are now. One thing that has kept me till now is my determination and my belief that I cannot quit, though I might take a purse, I cannot stop.

Certainly, it has not been easy, and being able to showcase my outfits on runways within four years in this business is something that I am proud of and I am looking forward to even being in this business for up to 40 years and even passing it down to my children.

How have you been able to Sustain Your Brand Over These Years in The Already Saturated Fashion Industry?

Going into the industry was not easy at all. This is because of the high level of competition, but the love and passion I have for fashion somehow made it easier for me to penetrate the industry.

Another factor is that though I have people I look up to, I am not trying to be like anybody. Hence, am not under any form of pressure to do it like any person. So, what has kept me is the fact that I can create my designs.

Although the kind of fashion I do is fast fashion; something people can just pick up and go, which would be easy for me to copy someone’s style and make it sell, I try as much as possible to create my Unisex designs myself (English and Native)) and put them out there.

I think design, I breathe design and I sleep design. Anywhere I am I am seeing something to create in my head. I have so many ideas. The Holy Spirit guides me, shows me what to do and I have so many ideas in my head.

Our good customer service has also contributed to keeping us this far. I am not the kind of entrepreneur who would say no refund. For instance, if a customer has a problem with her clothes, she can always come and we will amend it for free. But, if it is something we cannot solve, we can refund it.

We do not have a strict policy of non-refund if the fault is from us; we have a very flexible return policy and we treat our customers very well.

Therefore, within these four years, a larger percentage of our customers are returning customers. Nevertheless, we have new customers, but a percentage of our customers are those who have been buying from us for like two to three years now.

Some have even been there for four years and they are still patronizing us. So, I would say that our customer service is one of the things that have kept us in business as well because we spend so much on taking care of our customers.

What Are Your Motivating Factors in Overcoming some of the Challenges in the Industry?

My motivation is the fact that I love to see men and women look good. Seeing people look good makes me so happy beyond any explanation. Then seeing them look good in TEM Luxury is another level of motivation.

It is so fulfilling to the extent that if I am having a bad day and someone sends me a picture of him or her wearing my dress, my heart will just melt and I will forget about the annoying day.

Another major motivation is in knowing that these clothes I am making make people look good and happy. Therefore, when I see men and women look that way, it’s fulfilling to me. More so, this is a business that I spoke to God about, and how long I want to stay in it is what I want to do.

Thus, stopping because of one challenge or the other, or not doing the business anymore would be like me not accepting what God has done for me. This is because I always feel like God has kept me till now so there is no challenge I cannot face and I so much trust in God.

Consequently, no matter what I face, my motivation is that God and the Holy Spirit are there to guide me and so I don’t have any issues.

What Do We Expect from You and TEM Luxury Shortly?

Shortly, we are going to be a global brand. The plan we have is that within the next few years, every retail store that sells clothes; the way one sees the likes of Zara, and H&M in every retail store all over the world, that’s how TEM Luxury will be seen.

Whether one is in the US, Turkey, Australia, or Canada, he or she will be able to see TEM Luxury off the rack in any retail shop and will be able to get it. So that is our aspiration for the next few years and I know we are going to get there.

This gesture inspired her to be a nurse and to provide care and comfort of the same standard not only as a Nurse but to also extend the same care and support to people around her through my Humanitarian service. In recognition of this, she aspires to build a robost platform to provide free healthcare screening for less privileged children in her community.

Why Princess Anne’s Two Children Are not Prince and Princess

Princess Anne’s two children Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall were both in attendance at Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral on Monday 19 September. The two royals supported the rest of their high-profile family at the sombre occasion – but it left fans with questions regarding their titles.

Peter and Zara do not have titles, and this is due to a centuries-old family tradition. Unlike her cousins Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, Zara is not a princess – and likewise, Peter is not a prince.

Briefly Explain Volunteering Support To The Lay Man Who Does Not Know What It Entails

Volunteering Support means working with others to make a meaningful contribution to a better community. It is a form of helping in which people actively seek out opportunities to assist others in need, make considerable and continuing commitments to provide assistance and sustain these commitments over extended periods, often at considerable personal cost.

Several features mark it as a distinctive form of helping. Unlike the helping that occurs spontaneously in response to emergencies, volunteers typically seek out opportunities to help. Unlike the obligated helping that occurs in the context of ongoing relationships, volunteers typically do not know those they help in advance and have no prior bonds of obligation to help them.

Volunteering Support Seems to be Less Regarded In Nigeria, How Would You Say Your Passion Has Helped To Overcome The Challenges?

Oxford Dictionaries defines a challenge as “a circumstance or obstacle that keeps people or things apart or prevents communication or progress.” When applying this to volunteering support, a challenge is what keeps someone from being able to volunteer or volunteer effectively. Common among these challenges are language, physical health, skill level, time, location, finance, and expectations.

Volunteering support is a passion for me; that sufficiently prepared me to take up the challenges that come with voluntary work. I believe there are no insurmountable challenges and I have never really had a day when I asked myself why I took to volunteering. I have enjoyed every moment of it. Challenges are part of everyday experience and when the going gets tough, the tough get going.

Many People Have Described You As A Uniquely Passionate Volunteer (Very Unusual These Days). Where Did You Get That Attribute From?

Passion. volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless. In volunteering, passion is important because volunteers are individuals who have found a passion, and a purpose in their volunteer work. Through volunteering support, I derive a sense of well-being or personal satisfaction. In short, I have found their bliss.

Also, beyond the God-given factor, it is family. I grew up in a family where I was trained by a single mum (my dad died when I was really little). So seeing what my mum had to pass through as a young mother gave me that determination and passion.

Being able to pass through such a background and seeing where I am now (though I am not rich, I thank God for His grace), it pricks my conscience to see people suffer. Therefore, whenever I see that volunteering opportunity, I want to get involved in any little way I can.

Volunteering Support is day-to-day life in different aspects of endeavours, just that Moments with Favourite Collections is in the business aspect. Some of these incentives include volunteer career development opportunities, virtual volunteering, flexible scheduling options, and much more. Providing incentives is a great way to increase volunteer recruitment success.

Another great way to induce volunteers to fulfil opportunities and continue to volunteer in the future is by providing a great experience. It may sound easier said than done but these are some of the many ways that the Nigerian Government and NGOs can enhance volunteer support in Nigeria.

Queen Nina Canvases A Stable Future for The Vulnerable Child

It is a well-known fact that any society that respects equity and social justice will in the same vein create enabling environment for greater respect for the fundamental human rights of children.

The past few years could rightly be described as some of the toughest in the lives and times of the Nigerian citizenry, especially the younger population who are at the receiving end of absolute poverty, terrorism, and other manifestations of violence and crimes that have enveloped the nation.

Spurred by passion and concern for the vulnerable children in the society, the reigning Beauty of the World Tourism; Miss Ogeh Nancy Ene, popularly known as Queen Nina has called on the government and the political class to ensure a stable future for the Nigerian child by creating an atmosphere of socio-economic stability necessary for them to have an assured tomorrow.

A media statement signed by the Beauty Queen noted that children are the leaders of tomorrow and that it takes a heart of love and gratitude to honor one another, especially the vulnerable ones. “Honoring these vulnerable children is the greatest gift I could ever wish for”, she stressed.

According to her: “Children in Nigeria and Africa at large face systematic abuse, discrimination and are regularly denied the right to life and security of person, full legal capacity, health care, education, inheritance, and freedom of movement.

“Children still do not have full access to economic and political decision-making processes in their families, nations, or international institutions. Too often, governments allow crimes against children to go unpunished, continuing a culture of impunity for family members, State agents, and others who discriminate or commit violence against children”, Queen Nina explained.

Continuing, the Cross River-born beauty queen and CEO of the Nigeria Fashion and Culture International Agency decried the situation of the Nigerian child who is being raped, kidnapped, either for ransom or trafficked for economic reasons.

This, she blamed on the lack of adequate security in the Country. She, therefore, pleaded with parents and guardians to desist from the habit of sending their children to the street to hawk wares which, according to her, exposes the child to unnecessary danger.

As a pragmatic demonstration of her passion for the vulnerable children, Queen Nina revealed that she has put in place a fastidious plan to partner with Jhpiego Nigeria and the Centre for Clinical Care and Clinical Research on a USAID funded project to support orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) towards proper adherence and mental balance mostly when it comes to taking their ARVs

More so, she has plans of initiating a seminar session with orphans and vulnerable children, with their caregivers on a monthly bases to educate them on the need to build a bond between the vulnerable children and their caregivers.

Youths Have The Solution To Almost All The Problems In Africa;- Rt. Hon. Elendu

His background evoked in him a yearning to engender purposeful leadership, especially among young people who are daily exposed to bad leadership examples. This sense of purpose pulled him towrads youth advocacy, as he saw in it a veritable platform through which light could be beamed on the right leadership tenets and in so doing provoke a paradigm shift among different stakeholders and young people.

In this chat with Kennedy Onyegbado, the quintessential Speaker, 2^nd Assembly of Democracy Africa Youth Parliament; Rt. Hon. Graham Elendu lays emphasis on various focal areas including his ambitions, his burning zeal for youth’s emancipation and the role the youths can play in solving most of Africa’s problem.

Over the years, you have continued to seek veritable platforms to express your insatiable hankering for purposeful leadership engagement and development of African Youths; what has been your motivating drive?

The desire for my continued involvement in advocating for purposeful leadership engagement and development of African Youths was borne out of the fact that I see a lot of very competent youths in this part of the world who are not given the opportunity to lead.

Research has it that a couple of times when youths have been given the opportunity they have done very well. We have the French experience and a couple of other countries where younger people lead and they have been doing very well.

More so, because we are in the jet age, I believe that the people to manage an age like this are the jet people and that’s why I have always advocated that young persons are given the opportunity to lead.

In Nigeria for instance, most of the people we see at the helm of affairs till date got into the limelight when they were young. The likes of Nnamdi Azikiwe and the then elites all got into the scheme of things while they were young.

Sadly, those people who had opportunity to express themselves when they were young are the ones not giving young people the opportunity to do the same. This is very disturbing and that has been my motivation, because the younger ones have to take the stage.

What is your campaign and extensively what are your expectations from African Governments?

My campaign is what it is. I have always advocated for youth inclusion in government and over the years my expectation has been the same; we should have a percentage of youths in running the affairs, especially in areas where it affects the youths.

For instance, I do not see the rationale where non-youths will be running the affairs of the Ministry of Youths. I have a couple of friends who are also like minds in this area. There is this movement somewhere around Anambra state led by a friend of mine; Mr. Innocent Nduanya where they are asking for 50-50 or nothing.

This confirms my goals, as I have always said it that the youths should be included in governance; if not for anything but for them to learn. Beyond learning, I have seen that the youths are very competent and can hold a lot of offices, so why not we give them the opportunity?

My expectations are very high, and one thing that must be noted is the fact that the youth population in Africa is not just the future of Africa, but the now of Africa. So I expect African Governments to have a more youth-inclusive government. This is because most of the solutions I want to posit can be provided by the African youth.

In the course of my activities I have met youths from a lot of African countries and I can affirm that the stuff and contents African youths are made of is phenomenal. As such, one can see that the youths have the solution to almost all the problem we have in Africa, but what we don’t just have is the political will or the political inclusion in order for the youths to execute these solutions.

I birthed and ran the Role Model Initiative; an initiative that enthuses young people to maximize their God-given potentials by telling the stories of successful individuals who triumphed against all odds, and for over 12 years, it exposed me to a lot of competent youths.

Hence, when I advocate for youth inclusion, I am still a very strong advocate of competence. For the reason that one is young doesn’t qualify him or her alone to gain these positions, but must also be competent, which doesn’t really lack amongst our youths.

Two years ago, you were inducted into the Democracy Africa Youth Parliament as Nigeria’s representative, and a year later you became the Speaker of the 2^nd Assembly. How would you describe your engagements so far?

Yes, I represent Nigeria at the Democracy African Youth Parliament (DAYP), where we have 120 youths drawn from 54 African Countries and by God’s grace I am privileged to be the speaker of the 2^nd Assembly.

Basically, DAYP is an assembly of youths to advocate policies and everything around youths. This, we have been doing using the African Union platform, though the covid-19 pandemic took a large chunk of my tenure as speaker of the parliament.

Nevertheless, my tenure brought in dynamism and functionality. I took over the helm of affairs as speaker of DAYP amidst a lot of irregularities and crisis. But within my tenure I tried to calm the nerves and tried to carry everybody along so as to steer the ship in one direction.

We met a lot of irregularities when we came in as parliamentarians; some of those details I do not want to dish out, but within this my tenure I gave DAYP a direction and I think I would be remembered for harnessing the parliament.

So, having given it a direction, I am ready to step aside and pursue for higher callings and allow someone else to continue from where I stopped.

Given the prevalence of communal crisis and insecurity in Africa, especially your home country Nigeria, what is DAYP doing or hope to do in engaging different stakeholders towards ameliorating this crisis?

The insecurity in Nigeria is not only peculiar to Nigeria. The truth is that there is little or nothing we can do as individuals or as a body other than to keep pressurizing the government to take action.

Our mandate is advocacy and serving as some sort of pressure group. Consequently all we do is to keep putting pressure on the authorities to do the right thing and whatever they need to do in order to protect lives of citizens as it is the primary function of government.

For the northern region of Nigeria where banditry is high at the moment, we have always advocated for education, since we realized that it is because of the lack of education that these bandits can be brainwashed.

Observably, during the previous administration, there was this high surge of almajiri schools. At that time we understand the peculiar nature of things, and due to cultural or religious interpretation these things are halted.

Nevertheless, as a parliament we have different committees that tackle these things specifically. As the speaker of the parliament, what I ensured that these committees get all they need to execute their activities.

Again, we need to understand that poverty in the land is also a key factor in enhancing this crisis. Like I said earlier, our position is advocacy and we engaged those that are in charge, those that are supposed to handle these areas. We pushed our policies that are youth friendly, including preaching the SDGs, because the SDGs address most of these issues.

This is what we have been doing, we have been engaging when necessary and since we are privileged to be operating from the African point of view, we also engaged the embassies and the consulates.

“Stepping aside and going for a higher calling”; has your tenure ended and where would you be pitching your tent next?

Though I still have large time ahead of me as speaker, but I will be bowing out very soon so as to enable me pursue higher callings. I am moving from DAYP to the World Assembly of Youths where I wish to still continue to give my little quota in youth advocacy and policy making.

The World Assembly of youths is a representation of youths from all over the world. Like the name goes, it sure has a higher audience than where I am at the moment. I am moving there because I actually want to have a larger platform to push my advocacy, push my thoughts and champion my courses.

Actually, why I get involved with all these bodies, organisations and institutions is because I do not subscribe to violence as a way of engagement. As an apostle of non-violence, I have always tilted to the intellectual side and that is why I engage in more of advocacy.

Briefly highlight what Nigeria and Africa as a whole should be expecting of you at the World Assembly of Youths?

I would not be too specific with what they would be expecting of me, but my hopes are high and intend to steer the tide and draw huge attention to Africa as a whole and Nigeria in particular.

Nigeria and Africa have peculiar cases and having someone at the world stage drawing attention to these peculiar cases will not be a bad idea. This is actually the reason I am going there and I hope to give in my best when I eventually gets there.

Siya George Batubo; the Creative Director of Seeyaa’s Clothings (SYC) is a perfect example of a youth persona, who has broken free from imposed and self-imposed blockades that usually dragged behind, most individual youths from achieving their dreams.

Very assiduous, focused and result oriented, Mrs. Batubo has for the last five years carved a niche for herself and her brand in the already over saturated fashion and clothing industry of Nigeria and beyond, and has overtime demonstrated her relevance and passion.

These she was able to demonstrate when The World Satellite Online Magazine encountered her not too long ago in Abuja, Nigeria. During our chat with her, she took us on a voyage around the Fashion and Clothing Industry of Nigeria and beyond as well as how she has been able to penetrate the industry and sustained her brand for the past five years together with her aspirations for the years ahead.

Seeyaa’s Clothings Celebrated 5 Years in November 2020; What Does This Mean To You As A Person?

As a person, five years in this business is actually a very big deal for me because I have been through a lot of challenges. So having stayed five years, I am super grateful to God. Again my determination has kept me, I have always believed that I can take a pause, but I cannot stop, I can’t quit; that is one thing that has kept me till now because I know that quitting is not an option, stopping is not an option.

Nonetheless, there where times within these last five years when I actually paused for a while; I didn’t have any staff as it was just me. However, I would say that my determination and passion for fashion kept me and God too has been my source.

So, though it has not been easy, it is something that I am really proud to say that I have been in this business for five years and I am looking forward to even being in this business for up to 40 years and even pass it down to my children.

How Where You Able to Penetrate The Industry and Sustained Your Brand Over These Five Years?

Though I have people I look up to, I am not trying to be like anybody. Hence, am not under any form of pressure to do it like any person. So what has kept me is the fact that I am able to create my own designs.

Although the kind of fashion I do is fast fashion (ready to wear); something people can just pick up and go, which would be easy for me to copy someone’s style and make it sell, I still try as much as possible to create my own designs myself and put it out there.

I think design, I breathe design and I sleep design. Anywhere I am I am seeing something to create in my head. I have so many ideas. Infact the Holy Spirit guides me, shows me what to do and I have so many ideas in my head.

Another thing that has kept me is our good customer service. I am not the kind of entrepreneur who would say no refund. For instance, if a customer has a problem with her clothes, she can always come and we will amend it for free. But, if it is something we cannot solve, we can refund.

We do not have strict policy of non-refund if the fault is from us; we have a very flexible return policy and we treat our customers very well.

Noticeably, within these five years, 85 percent of our customers are returning customers. Though we have new customers, but a larger percentage of our customers are those who have been buying from us for like two to three years now.

Some have even been there for five years and they are still buying from us. So I would say that our customer service is one of the things that have kept us in business as well because we spend so much in taking care of our customers.

What Are The Motivating Factors Behind This Your Passion?

My motivation is that fact that I love to see women look good. Seeing women look good makes me so happy beyond any explanation. Then seeing women look god in Seeyaa’s Clothings is another level of motivation.

It is so fulfilling to the extent that if I am having a bad day and someone sends me a picture of her wearing my dress, my heart will just melt and I will forget about the annoying day.

Another major motivation is in knowing that these clothes I am making make people look good and happy. Therefore, when I see women and children look that way, it’s fulfilling to me. More so, this is a business that I spoke to God about and how long I want to stay in it being what I want to do.

Consequently, no matter what I face, my motivation is that God and the Holy Spirit are there to guide me and so I really don’t have any issues.

What Do We Expect From You and Seeyaa’s Clothings In Five Years From Now?

In the next five years we are going to be a global brand. The plans we have is that within the next five years, every retail store that sells clothes; the way one sees the likes of Zara, H&M in every retail store all over the world, that’s how Seeyaa’s Clothings (SYC) will be seen.

Whether one is in US, Turkey, Australia, Canada, she will be able to see SYC off the rack in any retail shop and will be able to get it. So that is our aspiration for the next five years and I know we are going to get there, because we already have some wholesalers; people who buy from us and sell in the US. Hopefully we are going to get more of them.

We could not agree more! Describing Siya George Batubo as an epitome of resilience, innovativeness and hardwork could be an overstatement. A humble, respectable, and passionate individual; she remains a role model and source of inspiration to young and aspiring entrepreneurs.

QUEEN JANET AKOR; Driven by Passion

Spurred by passion and determination, Queen Janet Akor; the current holder of Queen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is a seasoned Beauty Queen and a Catalogue Model, who has broken free from imposed and self-imposed blockades that usually dragged behind, most individual youths from achieving their dreams.

From a background where modelling was seen as a waste of time and a sign of waywardness, Janet Akor hails from Benue State in Nigeria. She had her elementary education at St. Lois Nursery and Primary School, Benue State. She proceeded to attend the Goodnews International Secondary School, Benue State, and was later admitted into the Benue State University where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mass Communication.

Focused and result oriented, Queen Janet has overtime demonstrated her passion in supporting to develop self confidence in the young people and making them see the importance of skills acquisition before leaving school in addition to helping the less privileged attain a better life and education, which will set them on the right path to achieving their goals and dreams

Her zeal and passion towards galvanizing the interest for child rights and the less privileged became more profound when she contested for the 2019 edition of the Queen of The Federal Republic of Nigeria Beauty Pageant organised by Street Minds Empire (SME) The light-skinned trailblazer, who rode on the crest of the desire for the advancement, development and security of lives of the vulnerable, was crowned Queen after biting other contestants in intellectual assessments and cultural display.

Acknowledging the fact that being a Beauty Queen is not just about the funfair of the crown, the inventive and multi-talented Janet has continued to develop a robust platform to engage stakeholders at promoting child’s education and championing charity campaigns as veritable ingredients for socio-economic development.

A meticulous, innovative and strong team leader; as a testament of her will and commitment, shortly after the pageant, and in commemoration of the 2019 World Aids Day, Queen Janet collaborated with Anne Ozeng Aid Foundation to carry out a Medical Outreach. With the little given, we received more in terms of prayers and gratitude from the families of the beneficiaries. It was fulfilling and gratifying”.

Undoubtedly, every kind gesture has an inspiration. For Queen Janet, the advancement of child’s right and social security for the poor and the needy in the society such as ours is one that cannot be over-emphasized, and the bedrock for viable Human and Material Capacity Development. “If I am in the position to help or reach out and I fail to do that, I would forever be restless; education is Key”, Queen Janet explained.

For the purpose of identification, I would like us to start by asking you to introduce yourself and what you do

I am Jasmine Blessing Anekole; a fitness instructor with specialties in Yoga fitness activities. I have done my Registered Yoga Teaching (RYT) Training course and so a certified Yoga instructor. Additionally, I have attended lots of Yoga retreat classes in and out of the country on how to be better at different types of Yoga sequences and styles. This is because as a Yoga teacher or instructor, to help understand the concepts and appreciate the different varieties of yoga types and styles I need to keep educating and updating myself. There are different levels in Yoga and I will be going to 500 level soon.

To the lay person, what is Yoga and what are the functions?

Yoga is the union of the body, soul and mind which brings it to one single form. It helps a lot to improve posture, increase blood circulation, increase attention span and improves memory. In addition, doctors in hospitals would sometimes refer a troubled child and/or those recovering from certain types of accident to Yoga activities to help them regain memory loss. This is because Yoga is all about attention.

Again, I have had in my class someone who walked to me after class and say “instructor I know you may not really know this, but before I started Yoga I used to have pile and it was really painful, but since I started yoga, its being different.

So, one cannot even summarize the functions of yoga in a single term but generally, it helps the whole human being to give good health, good life to different class of people. Yoga could be likened to the old Ayurvedic Medicine which the ancient Indians do,

However, the main importance of yoga is that it aids flexibility. One thing I discovered on my yoga journey is that yoga helps in weight loss and it also helps to get the hips and thighs in shape. More so, it helps strong and tone inner thighs and aids bigger hips. Broodily, It helps to create mobility.

Highlight Some of the Popular Types of Yoga and Briefly Reflect on Them

Undoubtedly there are certain misconceptions about yoga wherein people describe yoga as having spiritual undertone. The truth is that there are lots of yoga practices going on; there is the spiritual level of yoga which not even every normal human being can unlock.

Notwithstanding, there are the popular types of yoga which we do as lay people; we don’t need to take it all the way. We have Hatha Yoga. Hatha Yoga is the type of yoga basically for beginners where they have simple sequences they could do.

Then we have the advanced yoga type called Vinyasa. In Vinyasa Yoga there are calculated sequences which one could do. It has some salutations (A and B) and lots of other types of sequences and yoga flows. Again, there is Laughter Yoga for people to just go and laugh and get all the health benefits through it.

There are also Myths about Yoga; people say yoga is not for guys. Now I ask “is healthy living not for guys?” In the ancient India it was men who started yoga and women were only allowed to practice yoga at a much later stage. But you know whatever a woman puts her heart to, she does it very well. That could explain why women are dominating the whole idea of Yoga.

Yoga seems to be More familiar in Europe and America, what are you doing to overcome this and other challenges in Nigeria and Africa at large?

Yes, I will agree with you that yoga seems to be more familiar in Europe and America, especially in India. However, there is a shocking revolution in this century; through the help of the internet lots of people are keying into what they see as the importance of yoga.

In Nigeria, particularly in Kaduna, when I started yoga; people’s main concern was that they were too old to start yoga. Nonetheless I have been able to do lots of education on the need to remove those stereotypes because yoga is for all body types.

Now I am even surprised at the rate at which people are beginning to take the health and fitness thing in Nigeria as a whole to another level. If you go out in the streets you will see lots of people understanding the concept of jogging, running, walking, to keep fit.

Also, it’s been accepting for a whole lot of people to want to start yoga. But the major factors that I can say throughout my field and study of yoga in Nigeria is the fact that people still believe in myths that you need to be flexible to do yoga. You need to be also a certain weight to start Yoga, but am glad that is all being discarded now because people are beginning to key in.

Another challenge is that, for instance here in Northern Kaduna, most of the women prefer doing Yoga within their house hold because they feel its haram to be out with the general public without their ‘abayas’ and men will get to see them and they don’t feel comfortable. Nonetheless they register and key into private yoga classes.

Generally, yoga in Nigeria and in Africa has improved and a lot of people are beginning to be aware about it; thanks to internet facilities and the global world we live in now.

Because of their peculiarities, do you have any project that enables the Rural Communities appreciate Yoga Practices?

Yes! with aims of taking Yoga to the grassroots and local communities, I started an NGO called Kaduna Yoga Project. With the help of the NGO, I added Community Yoga initiative to my yoga routine wherein I go to the grassroot with a team of 5 people consisting of a nutritionist, myself (Yoga Instructor), two aerobics instructors and one translator.

Periodically we visit certain communities with foodstuffs and other items from people who are willing to donate. On a certain date when we go to any rural community, we try to educate the people about proper nutrition.

It’s quite surprising that the people in the rural areas have better healthy life span than most of us who live in the city. Accordingly, we help educate them on how to use their natural resources for effective healthy living. Just in case they don’t understand the language, we always have a translator in our team who mediates.

After all these are being done, we now show them the importance of how to keep fit. We do simple yoga postures, we let them recreate even for children and adults and we just make it fun and after which we donate items to the community

We do follow-ups like one or two months later when we go back and do lots of fun activities with them. It’s amazing how through the Community Yoga initiative, I have been able to take Yoga into many grass roots.

Beyond this, I will also be teaming up with the state government any moment when the Covid-19 pandemic is over to take this bigger. We are already in negotiations wherein I have availed them of everything I would be needing and also the importance of the whole initiative. My team and I are working on how we can get the best of the initiative.

On a Larger Scale, how can the Government assist in making Yoga more viable in Nigeria?

The inclusion of yoga practices in some schools would be good for kids to understand their capabilities at a young age. I know we have Physical and Health Education in school’s curriculum, but I do not think that a whole lot comes from the practical aspect of it, just more of the theories. Therefore, if Yoga activities could be involved in our School curriculum it would really help.

Once more, in some schools that I do yoga classes for, the challenge these children face before then was that they were not able to sit for a particular class and concentrate. Since we started Yoga classes for them, we have had lots of upgrades and nice words from the kids.

Besides, I stay opposite the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital and I go there to help the patients with some yoga activities, which helps. Sometimes it serves as a physiotherapy treatment.

As well, I live beside a correctional facility where I also go to help inmates; I do all these for free. So, if Government can include Yoga activities as a normal standard practice in Nigeria, we would really go great places.

Professionally How many years have u been doing Yoga and Looking back to all those years, how satisfied are you?

I started Yoga as a child but was off and on because of my academic pursuits. I started hosting classes and feeling free to share my online and private classes with the public in 2015. With that my confidence level went up and I started teaching professionally in 2016.

Looking back at all these years, Yoga is something that really keeps you on your feet. If for instance there are 500 yoga poses, I have only learnt like 100. Thus, am still in the mood to learn a whole lot more.

Yoga is an everyday thing and even if you have learnt all the yoga poses, there is a way you can now ‘funkify’ all these poses. For example, a recent yoga practice or style has been added, which is called hip-hop yoga. Initially one thinks Yoga is supposed to go with calm music, meditation and everything.

One Mr. Brandon Copeland started the hip-hop yoga movement where you get to play hip-hop music and do yoga as well with it just to make people comfortable and make it more accepting instead of using the conventional Indian sound.

I hope that in the future I will be able to incorporate Yoga styles that would be generally accepted by all yogis all over the world. Consequently, I am not as satisfied as I want to be and would still seek for satisfaction as the years go on; that’s the major aim of being a yogini.

Queen Mimidoo Uhundu and The Girl-Child’s Advocacy Campaign

Queen Mimidoo Williams Uhundu; the current holder of Face of Middle-Belt Nigeria has continued to implement her pledge of advancing advocacies and campaigns geared towards protecting and preserving the dignity of the Girl-Child through proactiveness in initiating and partnering on a number of women’s and Girlchild reproductive projects.

In the past few months since winning the Face of Middle-Belt Pageant, Queen Mimi has laid emphasis on various focal areas which include discrimination, exploitation, inequalities and violence in all forms.

Very assiduous, focus and result-oriented, her personal mission is to work towards widespread and availability of means, resources and opportunities for the curbing, redressing and eventual elimination of gender-based inequality in all forms.

As a testament of her will and commitment, the 22-year-old incorporated the Spring of Hope for the Girlchild Initiative Foundation; an NGO whose vision is to create an enabling environment where the rights of women and other vulnerable groups are guaranteed.

Under this platform, the Benue-born beauty queen has carried out several advocacy campaigns and outreach programmes to ameliorate the plight of women and the venerable, while developing consciousness of their dignity, especially the Girlchild.

Worthy of mention are the International Women’s day Celebration with Internally Displaced Persons at Daudu Camp Benue and Sensitization on Menstrual Hygiene, to stress the need for proper hygiene and also highlight the consequences of poor menstrual hygiene.

Beyond this, during a recent exclusive chat, Mimi expressed her desire to explore the use of the media of mass communication as instruments of social mobilization and enlightenment to continue to call on government and stakeholders to take proactive steps in tackling the persistent barriers against gender quality and recognize the enormous potentials of women as the society is driven by their existence.

On-the-one-hand, Miss Williams who has been upbeat at discovering and encouraging talented female youths in Nigeria and beyond to participate effectively in championing gender empowerment campaigns in Nigeria underscored that girls are disappointed with the stewardship of our planet, the unabated violence directed against them and the slow pace of change in fulcrum issues like education.

Asserting that policies are needed that will promote equality in childcare responsibilities and provide State support to families, and those who work in the informal economy, the multi-awards winning Fashion and Pageant Model believes as cause for hope, growing support in tackling gender-bias barriers; a ‘driving will’ for an equal world for everyone regardless of class or gender across generations and countries, while adding that the last 25 years “have shown us what is needed to accelerate action for equality.

“We don’t have an equal world at the moment and women and girls are angry and concerned about the future. They are radically impatient for change. It’s an impatience that runs deep, and it has been brewing for years”, the beauty queen noted.

Again, in the course of the chat, Queen Mimi clearly expressed that The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, which has been described as the most progressive blueprint ever for advancing the rights of not only women but girls calls for a world where every girl and woman can realize all her rights, such as to live free from violence, to attend and complete school, to choose when and whom she marries, and to earn equal pay for equal work.

The Queen further explained: “In nearly 25 years, we have seen more girls move from dreaming to achieving. More girls today are attending and completing school, fewer are getting married or becoming mothers while still children, and more are gaining the skills they need to excel in the future world of work.

She informed that girls are breaking boundaries and barriers posed by stereotypes and exclusion, including those directed at children with disabilities and those living in marginalized communities. “As entrepreneurs, innovators and initiators of global movements, girls are creating a world that is relevant for them and future generations. There is need therefore to create an enabling environment and opportunities for the socio-economic empowerment of women”, Queen Uhundu added.

Another area of concern for Queen Mimidoo Williams Uhindu is the fact that despite these inherent attributes, women empowerment is still a burning issue in the polity. According to her, this is in recognition of the vast number of women with little or no education and skills to enable them support their livelihoods or to become active in the mainstream economy of the country.

For her; “when you invest in a girl’s education, there are vast social and economic benefits. Girls who are educated are less likely to become victims of violence and they are also less likely to become child brides and child mothers. Educated girls contribute to their country’s economic growth. The impacts are multi-generational, too. Women typically reinvest 90% or more of their income into their families”.

No doubt, the progress since the Beijing Declaration is remarkable, but Mimidoo still believes that girls around the world – especially those living in rural areas or humanitarian settings and those with disabilities – still need us to stand with them to achieve their full potential.
